The First Fleet was a group of eleven British ships. These ships carried settlers to the mainland of Australia. This journey began the era of European colonisation in that part of the world.

The fleet was led by Captain Arthur Phillip. It included two Royal Navy vessels and three storeships. There were also six ships used to transport convicts. This group was sent to start the Colony of New South Wales. This was the very first British settlement in Australia.

Preparing for such a long trip was a huge job. The ships had to carry everything needed to survive. They carried tools and seeds for farming. They also brought medical supplies like bandages and surgical instruments. Some ships carried items like handcuffs and leg irons. They even brought a wooden frame for the first Government House.

The people had to rely on these supplies at first. They hoped to grow their own food and raise animals once they arrived.

Many people helped decide to start this colony. Sir Joseph Banks was a famous scientist. He had travelled with James Cook in 1770. Lord Sydney was the Secretary of State who made the final decision. Britain needed a new place after the American Revolution changed things. They also wanted a base in the Pacific Ocean.

Captain Arthur Phillip was chosen to lead the whole expedition. He was given the title of Commodore for the fleet.

On 13 May 1787, the ships left Portsmouth, England. The journey lasted over 250 days.

Most people on board were convicts. These were people from Great Britain who had committed crimes. There were also marines, sailors, and officials. About 1,420 people started the journey. By the time they reached Sydney Cove, about 1,373 people had landed. The voyage was hard, and the chief surgeon reported 48 deaths during the trip.

The fleet first arrived at Botany Bay on 18 January 1788. However, Captain Phillip did not think Botany Bay was the right spot. He chose Port Jackson to the north instead.

The fleet arrived at Port Jackson on 26 January 1788. Today, we still remember this event in many ways. You can see scale models of the ships in the Museum of Sydney. Some ferries in Sydney are even named after the ships from the First Fleet.
