First Fleet

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The First Fleet was a collection of eleven British ships sent to Australia. This expedition marked the beginning of European colonisation on the Australian mainland. The fleet consisted of two Royal Navy vessels, three storeships, and six convict transports. It was organized to establish the Colony of New South Wales. This was the first British settlement in the region.

Several leaders and scientists helped plan this massive undertaking. Sir Joseph Banks, a scientist who traveled with James Cook in 1770, advocated for a colony at Botany Bay. He received help from James Matra, an American Loyalist. Matra even wrote a proposal for a settlement involving various groups of people. Ultimately, Thomas Townshend, Lord Sydney, made the official decision. Britain needed a new location for criminals after the American Revolution. They also wanted a strategic base in the Pacific to compete with French expansion.

Captain Arthur Phillip was appointed Commodore to lead the fleet. He was also tasked with becoming the Governor in Chief of the new colony. The fleet included the HMS Sirius, which served as Phillip's flagship. The Sirius was a 520-ton vessel originally built for trade. It was later converted for naval use and fitted with extra guns. Another important vessel was the HMAT Supply, an armed tender. The Supply was designed by shipwright Thomas Slade to ferry naval supplies.

The ships carried a massive amount of essential supplies for survival. They transported tools, seeds, and agricultural equipment for farming. They also brought medical supplies like bandages and surgical instruments. Some items were much more restrictive, such as handcuffs and leg irons. The fleet even carried a prefabricated wooden frame for the first Government House. This was necessary because the settlers had to rely on their own provisions. They had to grow food and raise livestock to survive in the new land.

The journey began on 13 May 1787, when the ships left Portsmouth, England. The voyage lasted over 250 days across the ocean.

The majority of the people on board were convicts. These individuals had been convicted of crimes like theft, fraud, or robbery. Their sentences ranged from seven years to life in penal transportation. The fleet also carried marines, sailors, and colonial officials. A total of 1,420 people embarked from England. By the time they reached Sydney Cove, about 1,373 people had landed.

When the fleet arrived at Botany Bay on 18 January 1788, Captain Phillip made a major decision. He rejected Botany Bay as the site for the colony. Instead, he chose Port Jackson to the north.

The fleet arrived at Port Jackson on 26 January 1788. The voyage was difficult and took a toll on the passengers. The chief surgeon, John White, reported 48 deaths during the trip. These deaths included marines, convicts, and several children. Despite these losses, the settlement was established.

The legacy of the First Fleet remains visible in Australia today. The Museum of Sydney displays scale models of the ships. These models were built by ship makers using original British archives. Even the city's transport system honors the fleet. Nine Sydney Harbour ferries built in the mid-1980s are named after the vessels. This event connects the history of British maritime expansion to the modern development of Australia.
