New South Wales, often called NSW, is a major state on Australia's east coast.

It shares borders with Queensland to the north and Victoria to the south. South Australia lies to its west. The eastern coastline meets the Coral and Tasman Seas. Within the state's borders sit two enclaves: the Australian Capital Territory and the Jervis Bay Territory. Sydney serves as the state capital.

It is also the most populous city in Australia. Today, the state's population exceeds 8.6 million people. Nearly two-thirds of these residents live in the Greater Sydney area.

Long before European arrival, Aboriginal people inhabited this region. They arrived in Australia between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago. Before settlement, an estimated 250,000 Aboriginal people lived here. In 1770, James Cook charted the eastern coast of the continent. He claimed the coastline for Britain. Cook originally named the land New Wales. He later changed the name to New South Wales.

In January 1788, Arthur Phillip arrived with the First Fleet. This fleet consisted of 11 vessels and over a thousand settlers. Many of these settlers were convicts.

The colony began as a British penal colony. A penal colony is a place used to hold and punish criminals. Initially, the colony focused on subsistence agriculture to feed itself. The British banned trade and shipbuilding to keep convicts isolated. However, these rules changed after Phillip left as governor. Military officers began acquiring land and importing goods from visiting ships. Former convicts also started farming and trading. By 1803, the colony had become self-sufficient in grain.

Industries like whaling and sealing also grew.

Growth continued as the colony expanded into new territories. In 1815, a road was completed across the Blue Mountains.

This allowed for large-scale farming west of the Great Dividing Range. During the 1820s, squatters established unauthorized cattle and sheep runs. This expansion led to violent conflicts with Aboriginal landowners. By 1844, wool accounted for half of all the colony's exports.

The population grew steadily, reaching 180,000 settlers by 1850.

New discoveries changed the economy during the mid-1800s. Coal was found early in the settlement period. In 1851, gold was discovered in the region.

By the 1890s, wool, gold, and coal were the primary exports. The government also invested in infrastructure. They built railways, telegraph lines, roads, and ports. By 1889, trains could travel from Brisbane to Adelaide via Sydney. This helped develop the wheat belt and regional industries.

New South Wales was vital to the creation of the Australian nation. Federation is the process where separate colonies join to form one country. Henry Parkes was a key leader who advocated for federation.

He helped create a plan for the colonies to unite. In 1899, the people of New South Wales participated in a referendum. A referendum is a direct vote by the people on a specific issue. The majority voted yes to join the federation. On 1 January 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia was inaugurated. Edmund Barton became the first prime minister of the new nation.

Since federation, the state has seen many social and political changes. Women won the right to vote in NSW in 1902. However, they could not stand for parliament until 1918. The state's economy has also become more diverse over time. It moved from simple farming to include more manufacturing. Today, New South Wales remains a central part of Australia's identity. It features iconic landmarks like the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
