Sydney is the capital city of New South Wales. It is the most populous city in Australia. The metropolis surrounds the famous Sydney Harbour. It stretches from the Pacific Ocean in the east to the Blue Mountains in the west.

To the north, it reaches the Hawkesbury River and Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. In the south, it extends toward the Royal National Park and Macarthur. The Greater Sydney region contains 658 suburbs. These are spread across 33 local government areas. Residents are often called "Sydneysiders."

Long before European arrival, Aboriginal Australians inhabited the region. Evidence shows human activity dating back at least 30,000 years. Some flaked pebbles suggest occupation as far back as 45,000 to 50,000 years ago.

There were between 4,000 and 8,000 Aboriginal people in the area. Many different clans lived on these lands. The coastal Eora people lived near the water. The Darug people occupied the inland area toward the Blue Mountains. The Dharawal people lived south of Botany Bay. These clans had a rich ceremonial life. They used tools made of stone, wood, bone, and shell. Their diets varied by location. Coastal clans relied on seafood. Hinterland clans ate forest animals and plants.

European contact began with James Cook in 1770. He charted the eastern coast and landed at Botany Bay.

In 1788, the First Fleet arrived to establish a British penal colony. This was the first European settlement in Australia. Captain Arthur Phillip led the fleet. It included more than 1,000 settlers and 736 convicts. Phillip named the settlement Sydney Cove after Thomas Townshend, the 1st Viscount Sydney.

He considered the name "Albion," but it was never used. The settlement faced early hardships. The soil was poor, and initial crops failed. This led to years of hunger and strict rationing. The food crisis ended when the Second and Third Fleets arrived.

As the colony grew, its structure changed. Governor Lachlan Macquarie played a major role in development. He established a bank, a currency, and a hospital.

He also commissioned roads, wharves, and public buildings. Parramatta Road opened in 1811. A road across the Blue Mountains was completed in 1815. This allowed for large-scale farming to the west. In 1842, Sydney was officially declared a city. The population grew through free British emigration. This shifted the colony from a penal settlement to a growing urban center.

Today, Sydney is a global hub with a massive population. In June 2025, the estimated population was 5,638,830. This number represents about 66% of the state's population.
