People who live there are often called "Sydneysiders."

Long before the modern city was built, Aboriginal Australians lived in this region.

Evidence shows they may have been there for 30,000 years. There were between 4,000 and 8,000 Aboriginal people in the area. Many different clans lived on the land. The Eora, Darug, and Dharawal were some of the main groups. These people used tools made from bone, shell, wood, and stone. They lived by fishing, hunting, and gathering plants. Coastal clans often ate seafood. People from different clans met for special ceremonies and trade.

In 1770, James Cook sailed along the coast and landed at Botany Bay.

Later, in 1788, a group of ships called the First Fleet arrived. They were led by Arthur Phillip. This group started a British penal colony at Sydney Cove.

This was the very first European settlement in Australia. The name "Sydney" came from a British official named Lord Sydney. At first, life was very hard because the soil was poor. The early settlers struggled with hunger until more ships arrived with food. Over time, the small settlement grew into a large town.

Sydney is now a very large and busy place.
