Bondi Beach is a famous stretch of sand in Sydney, Australia.

It sits in the Eastern Suburbs, about 7 kilometres east of the city center. The beach is about one kilometre long and faces south. This is unusual for beaches in the Sydney area. The name "Bondi" comes from the Dharawal language. It is thought to mean a loud thud. This might describe the sound of waves breaking on rocks.

Many different people have lived near this beach over a long time. For tens of thousands of years, Aboriginal Australian peoples lived in the area. They left behind rock carvings and shelters. Later, people from many other countries moved to the suburb. Migrants from New Zealand and Jewish migrants from many European nations helped the area grow.

Today, the suburb is a busy place with many different cultures. It has changed from a working-class area to a very popular spot.

In the past, the beach was used for picnics and fun. In 1882, it officially became a public beach. A tramway was even built to take people there in 1884.

People have always loved the water, but they had to follow strict rules. For a long time, there were laws about what kind of swimwear was allowed. Beach inspectors even measured people's clothes to make sure they were "decent." These rules changed many times through the 1900s. By 1929, huge crowds of people visited the beach during the summer.

Visiting Bondi Beach can be a very exciting experience.

You can watch surfers catch waves or see whales and dolphins in the ocean. Sometimes, you might even spot a tiny fairy penguin near the shore. The beach is also a place for big events. Every August, over 63,000 people run in the City to Surf race. There are also film festivals and art shows held here.

Safety is very important at such a busy beach. Lifesavers use red and yellow flags to mark safe swimming spots.

You should always swim between these flags to stay safe. There is also a famous rip current called the "Backpackers' Rip" near the south end. This area can be dangerous if you do not know about it. There are even shark nets under the water to help keep swimmers safe.
