These cliffs are covered in green rainforest. The city is the third-largest in its state. It is also the tenth-largest city in all of Australia. In 2018, about 302,739 people lived in the urban area.

The city's land is shaped by its unique geology.

It sits in the south-eastern part of the Sydney basin. The coastal plain is widest in the south. It becomes much narrower in the north. The escarpment has many famous mountains like Mount Keira and Mount Kembla. These hills contain layers of coal. Because of this, many coal mines have entrances along the slopes. The area is protected so the forests stay natural.

Wollongong has a very long history of industry.

The Dharawal Indigenous Australians lived here first. Later, European explorers like George Bass and Matthew Flinders visited in 1796. Settlers arrived to cut cedar wood and raise livestock. By 1834, the town was officially planned.

For a long time, coal mining was a main job. In 1878, steam engines helped move coal to the harbour. A sad mining disaster happened in 1902 at the Mount Kembla mine.

Heavy industry is still a big part of life today.
