To the east, it sits near the cities of Busan and Gimhae. To the west, you will find the city of Jinju. The city is shaped like a basin. This means it sits in a low area surrounded by mountains. The highest peaks nearby are Mt. Bulmo, Mt. Jeongbyeong, and Mt. Jangbok.

Because it is a planned city, Changwon was built with a very specific design. It was modeled after Canberra, the capital of Australia. The city uses a grid-like layout to help things run smoothly. There are separate areas for people to live and areas for big factories. One of the most important roads is Changwon Daero. This is the longest straight road in South Korea. It is so long that it can serve as an airplane runway during an emergency.

The city also has many underground walkways that can act as bomb shelters.

People have lived in this region for a very long time. It has been inhabited since the early Bronze Age. Long ago, the land near Masan Bay was an open space between the sea and the hills.

Over many years, the area had different names. In 209 AD, it was part of the Silla kingdom. The name Changwon was first used in 1408 during the Joseon period. In 1974, the city began to grow quickly as an industrial center. On 1 July 2010, three cities named Changwon, Jinhae, and Masan joined together. This created the unified city we see today.

Changwon is a very important place for making things. The Changwon Industrial Complex is a huge hub for many factories. It employs about 82,000 people. Many of these businesses make heavy machinery and chemicals. A very large part of the work involves making things for the military. In fact, 70% of South Korea's defense industry is based right here.

The city also has a large naval base in the Jinhae District. This base is used by the Republic of Korea Navy and the United States Navy.

Life in Changwon can be very active and green. The city has four distinct seasons. Summers are very warm, while winters are cold. To help keep the air clean, the city uses a bike-sharing program called Nubija.
