The name Suwon means "water source." This name fits the land very well. Many streams start on the hills of Gwanggyosan. These streams, like the Suwoncheon, flow south through the city. They eventually empty into the Yellow Sea at Asan Bay. Because there are few natural lakes here, the city uses reservoirs. These are man-made lakes used to hold water. One special place is the Irwang Reservoir. It is even known as a world heritage site for irrigation.

Suwon has a very long history. People have lived in this area since the early Bronze Age. Archaeologists have found old pottery and arrowheads there. In the year 1796, King Jeongjo moved the city to its current spot. He wanted to protect the people living there. To do this, he ordered the building of Hwaseong Fortress. This huge wall surrounds the town as a shield.
