Jeju City has a very long history. People have lived in this area since before recorded history. In downtown Jeju City, there are three holes called Samseonghyeol. Local stories say the first Jeju people came from these holes. The city has changed a lot since the 1970s. In the past, many buildings had thatched roofs. Those old buildings are slowly disappearing now. A part of the city called Shin Jeju was built up the hill from the airport. This area holds many government buildings.
