It is the 11th largest city in the entire country. The city is a major port located on the southeastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. It sits on the Nakdong River delta and faces Masan Bay.

To the east, it is bordered by the cities of Busan and Gimhae. To the west lies the city of Jinju, while Miryang sits to the northeast. This city is highly significant as a massive industrial and administrative center.

The geography of Changwon is defined by its unique basin shape. The city is nestled in a low area surrounded by several mountains. The highest peaks in the region are Mt. Bulmo, Mt. Jeongbyeong, and Mt. Jangbok.

Because it is a planned city, it follows a highly organized, grid-like urban layout. This design was intended to promote efficiency for both industry and administration. The city also includes several small islands in Masan Bay, such as Dot island and Sokuri island. The climate is humid subtropical, featuring very warm summers and cold winters.

Changwon's history stretches back to the early Bronze Age. In the early days, the area near Masan Bay was an open region between the ocean and hilly coastal plains.

During the Three Kingdoms period in 209 AD, the area was known as Gulja-gun within the Silla kingdom. The name Changwon was first used in 1408 during the Joseon period. Over many centuries, the region underwent many name changes and reorganizations. For example, it was called Uian-gun during the Unified Silla Period in 739 AD. Eventually, the modern city was formed on 1 July 2010 when Masan, Jinhae, and Changwon merged.

The city is famous for being South Korea's first planned city. It was modeled after the layout of Canberra, Australia. This planning includes a clear separation between residential areas and industrial zones. One notable feature is Changwon Daero, which is the longest straight road in South Korea. This road serves a dual purpose for national safety. In a state of emergency, it is designed to function as an airplane runway.

Additionally, the city contains underground walkways that can serve as bomb shelters during crises.

Economically, Changwon is a powerhouse driven by the Changwon Industrial Complex. This complex is a massive hub for heavy industry, including chemical and machinery sectors. It employs approximately 82,000 people and contains over 2,000 tenant companies. While 97.8% of these are small-to-medium businesses, large corporations like Samsung Techwin and LG Electronics also operate there. Most notably, Changwon is the heart of the nation's defense industry. About 70% of South Korea's defense industry is based in this city. This is due to the city's natural basin shape and easy access to the coast.

Cultural life in Changwon is diverse and vibrant. The city includes many green spaces like the Junamjeosuji reservoir, which acts as a bird sanctuary.

Residents also enjoy the Changdong Art Village, where vacant stores have been turned into galleries and cafés. The Sangnam neighborhood serves as a central hub for nightlife and commerce. On specific days of the month, the Sangnam-sijang farmer's market becomes a bustling center for food and crafts. The city also hosts famous events like the K-Pop World Festival and the Jinhae Gunhangje Festival. These festivals celebrate music, cherry blossoms, and local food.

Changwon also focuses heavily on modern urban health and sustainability. The municipal government has branded the city an "environmental capital." They participate in global climate change conferences and promote sustainable policies. One successful example is the Nubija bike-sharing program.
