The province shares borders with several other areas. To the north, it meets North Gyeongsang Province. To the west, it is bordered by North Jeolla and South Jeolla provinces. The southern boundary is the Korea Strait, which sits far from Nagasaki Prefecture in Japan. This province is a vital center for Korean industry, agriculture, and ancient history.

The geography of the province is shaped by water and mountains. The Nakdong River is the most important waterway in the region. It drains most of the province and flows through the middle of the mountain ranges.

The tail of the Taebaek Mountains reaches into the eastern part of the province. In the west, mountains like Jirisan, Deogyusan, and Bagunsan line the landscape. As the Nakdong River moves toward the sea, it creates the Gimhae Delta Plain. This lowland area is a central part of the province's natural structure.

Agriculture and fishing are essential to the local economy. The Gimhae delta plain serves as one of the best granaries in South Korea. Farmers in this region produce rice, beans, potatoes, and barley. Along the southern seaside, the land is used to grow cotton, sesame, and various fruits. The province is also a leading leader in the nation's fisheries. The combination of fertile plains and access to the sea provides many resources.

The history of South Gyeongsang involves many administrative changes. During the Joseon dynasty, the area was part of the larger Gyeongsang Province. In 1407, the government reorganized the districts for military purposes. They divided the area into Gyeongsangjwa-do and Gyeongsangwu-do based on the Nakdong River.
