Ulsan is a major metropolitan city in South Korea. It ranks as the seventh-largest metropolitan city in the country. It is also the eighth-largest city overall. The city is home to over 1.1 million people. Ulsan is located at the southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula. It sits at the southern end of the Taebaek Mountains. It is bordered by Busan to the south and Gyeongju to the north.

The city serves as the heart of the Ulsan Industrial District. It is often called an industrial powerhouse. This status comes from several massive global operations. Ulsan hosts the world's largest automobile assembly plant. This facility is operated by the Hyundai Motor Company. The plant has a huge annual capacity of 1,700,000 units. It began in 1968 with only 50,000 units of capacity. It also contains the world's largest shipyard. This shipyard is operated by Hyundai Heavy Industries. Additionally, the city has the world's third largest oil refinery. This refinery is owned by SK Energy and processes 840,000 barrels per day.

Ulsan has a long history of human habitation. Archaeologists found stone tools at the Mugeo-dong Ok-hyeon site. These tools prove humans lived there during the Paleolithic era. There are also remains from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. During the Jinhan confederacy, people mined and produced iron here. In the Later Silla period, Ulsan was a vital port. It served the economic hub of Gyeongju. Luxury goods like silver, glass, and peacock tails arrived by sea. In 1592, the area was a site of major fighting during an invasion. By 1642, records show Ulsan was already a shipbuilding site.

Modern industrial growth changed the city forever. Ulsan was chosen as a Special Industrial Zone in 1962.

It formally became a city the following year. Large groups like Hyundai and SK began building massive businesses there. Hyundai Heavy Industries was founded in 1973. This turned the city into a major company town. Many workers moved to Ulsan for these jobs. The city grew so much that it became a metropolitan city in 1997. This change recognized its massive economic importance to South Korea.

The economy of Ulsan is very strong. In 2020, it had a GDP per capita of $65,352. This was the highest of any region in South Korea. The city is also moving toward new energy technologies. In 2009, it built the first automobile hydrogen charging station in the country. In 2021, the first hydrogen ship charging station opened at Jangsaengpo Port. The city is now working on the Ulsan Green Hydrogen Town project. This project connects the city to a hydrogen power plant using underground pipelines. As of October 2024, 188km of these pipelines have been laid.

Beyond industry, Ulsan has many natural and cultural sites. The Taehwa River flows through the city into the East Sea. It is a central part of ecological restoration efforts. Visitors can go to the Jangsaengpo Whale Museum. This is the only whale museum in South Korea. For mountain lovers, the Yeongnam Alps are nearby. This range includes seven mountains taller than 1,000 meters. One famous spot is Ganwoljae, known for silver grass. The city also has beautiful beaches like Jinha and Ilsan. Ganjeolgot Cape is a special place to see the first sunrise on the peninsula.

Ulsan is a complex mix of heavy industry and nature. It connects global manufacturing to local ecosystems. The city relies on large corporations known as chaebols. This reliance is a topic of discussion for some economists. They look at how shifts in shipbuilding affect the local economy. Despite these industrial shifts, the city maintains a rich cultural life. It hosts football teams like Ulsan HD FC. These teams play in large venues like the Munsu Football Stadium. Ulsan remains a vital center for South Korea's economy and identity.
