The city sits at the southern end of the Taebaek Mountains. It is near the city of Busan to the south. Gyeongju is the neighbor to the north. Ulsan also sits right by the East Sea. This location makes it a very important place for both land and sea.

Ulsan is known as an industrial powerhouse. It is the heart of the Ulsan Industrial District. The city is home to the world's largest automobile assembly plant. This plant is run by the Hyundai Motor Company.

Ulsan also has the world's largest shipyard. This shipyard is operated by Hyundai Heavy Industries. The city also contains the world's third largest oil refinery. This refinery belongs to a company called SK Energy. These large businesses help the city grow very quickly.

People have lived in Ulsan for a very long time. Stone tools found at local sites show humans lived there during the Paleolithic era. There are also remains from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. During the Later Silla period, Ulsan was an important port. Ships brought luxury goods like silver and glass to the area. In 1592, the town was the site of a major battle. Later, in 1642, records show it was used for shipbuilding. The city grew into a big industrial center during the 1900s.

Today, Ulsan is a modern and busy place. It has a population of over 1.1 million people. The city is divided into four districts and one county.

In 2020, the city had the highest GDP per capita in South Korea. This means the area is very wealthy. Ulsan is even leading the way with new energy. It built the first hydrogen charging station in the country in 2009. Now, it is working on a special "Green Hydrogen Town." This project connects the city to a hydrogen power plant.

There is much more to see than just factories. The Taehwa River flows through the city into the sea. This river is a central part of nature in Ulsan. You can visit the Jangsaengpo Whale Museum to learn about marine life. If you like mountains, the Yeongnam Alps are nearby. Seven tall mountains there rise over 1,000 meters high. You can see silver grass on the hills in the autumn. People also enjoy the beautiful beaches and the Rose Festival in June.
