Asan

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Asan is a significant city located in South Chungcheong Province, South Korea. It sits just south of the large Seoul Capital Area. The city is home to approximately 400,000 people. Asan is most famous for its many hot springs. These natural warm waters have made the city a well-known destination for spas. The city grew to include the neighboring village of Onyang-dong. This area is also highly regarded for its relaxing hot spring resources.

The climate in Asan is classified as a humid continental climate. Scientists use the Köppen climate classification system to label this. Under certain measurement rules, it can also be seen as a borderline humid subtropical climate. This means the weather patterns fall between two different climate types. The city is very well connected to the rest of the country. It shares a high-speed rail station with the nearby city of Cheonan. This station is called Cheonan-Asan Station and serves the KTX trains. Travelers can reach Seoul in only about 30 minutes using this high-speed service.

Transportation in the region is quite advanced and efficient. Besides the KTX trains, the Seoul Metropolitan Subway extends into Asan. This subway line began servicing the city on 15 December 2008. For those traveling by car, the city is accessible from Incheon International Airport. The drive typically takes about two hours from the airport. Two major highways also pass through the city. These are the Seoul-Busan expressway and the West Coast expressway. These roads help move people and goods through the province.

Asan has a complex history of administrative changes. In 1983, the local government changed how its townships and towns were organized. In 1986, the town of Onyang was separated to become its own independent city. This changed the political map of the region for several years. However, these boundaries changed again in 1995. In that year, the City of Onyang and Asan County were combined. This merger created the modern City of Asan that exists today.

The economy of Asan is a major driver for the Chungnam region. It serves as the largest manufacturing base in Chungnam. The city contains 14 different industrial complexes. These sites focus on making automotive parts and electronic components. Large global companies operate massive facilities here. Samsung Electronics has an Onyang Campus for semiconductors. They also have a Samsung Display campus in Tangjeong. Hyundai Motor operates a large plant and an industrial complex in Inju-myeon. Other major companies include Hyundai Mobis, KCC, and the Hanwha Group. Many medium-sized companies like Nongshim and Dongseong Pharmaceuticals also call Asan home.

Agriculture and fishing have also shaped the local way of life. Agriculture is still present, but its importance is declining. Rice is the most common crop grown by local farmers. They also grow sweet potatoes, corn, and many types of fruit like pears and grapes. The livestock industry is growing and becoming more professional. This is because the hilly terrain is very suitable for farming animals. The coastline has also changed due to engineering projects. The construction of the Asan Bay Sea Wall and the Sapgyo Creek Sea Wall altered the environment. These walls caused fishing and salt-making to decline along the coast. Today, inland fishing is mostly done at Asan Lake. Farmers there also focus on eel farming in Sinchang-myeon and Seonjang-myeon.

There are many unique cultural and educational features in Asan. The city is home to five different universities. These include Hoseo University and Soonchunhyang University. For a different atmosphere, visitors can go to Blue Crystal Village in Tangjeong-myeon. This village was originally a vineyard. It was rebuilt as a new village during the construction of an industrial complex. It features white walls and blue roofs. This architectural style makes it look like Santorini, Greece. The city also honors the legacy of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. A shrine called Hyeonchungsa is dedicated to him. The city even hosts the Great Admiral Yi Sun-sin Festival every year.
