Samsung Group is a massive South Korean multinational manufacturing conglomerate. It is headquartered in the Samsung Town office complex located in Seoul. As a business conglomerate, it consists of many different affiliated businesses. Most of these companies operate under the Samsung brand name. Today, Samsung is the largest conglomerate in South Korea. It also holds the fifth-highest brand value in the entire world.

The name Samsung has a very specific meaning. According to the founder, the Korean hanja for Samsung means "three stars." The number three was chosen to represent something big, numerous, and powerful. The stars represent something that is everlasting or eternal. This vision helped guide the company as it expanded into many different sectors.

Samsung began as a small trading company in 1938. Lee Byung-chul founded the Mitsuboshi Trading Company in Daegu. At that time, the company had only forty employees. They focused on trading dried fish, noodles, and locally grown groceries. The business grew steadily over the next few decades. Lee moved the head office to Seoul in 1947. During the Korean War, he had to leave Seoul and started a sugar refinery in Pusan. In 1954, he founded a textile company called Cheil Mojik. This became the largest woollen mill in the country at the time.

In the late 1960s, Samsung entered the electronics industry. This move changed the company's future significantly. They opened a facility in Suwon and produced their first black-and-white television sets. In 1980, Samsung acquired Hanguk Jeonja Tongsin to enter telecommunications hardware. They began making switchboards, which eventually led to mobile phone manufacturing. By the 1980s, these electronics divisions were grouped under Samsung Electronics. The company also introduced the SPC-1000 in 1982, which was its first personal computer.

After Lee Byung-chul died in 1987, the company underwent a major change. The large organization was divided into five distinct business groups. These included the Samsung Group, Shinsegae Group, CJ Group, Hansol Group, and JoongAng Group. While they started together, these groups are now completely independent. For example, Hansol, Shinsegae, and CJ have been under independent management since their separations. They have no payment guarantees or share-holding ties with the main Samsung Group.
