The group began with the specific visions of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. In 1870, he started a trading company with 21,000 rupees in capital. He later bought a bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli. He converted this facility into the Empress Mill to produce cotton. In 1903, he opened the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel at the Colaba waterfront. This was a landmark achievement because it was the first hotel in British India to have electricity.

Jamsetji had four major goals for his life's work. He wanted to build a steel company, a famous hotel, a world-class school, and hydroelectric power plants.

After Jamsetji died in 1904, his son Dorabji Tata became the chairman. Dorabji worked to turn those early dreams into real industries. In 1907, he established the Tata Iron and Steel Company, which is now called Tata Steel.
