This massive institution provides higher education in various fields. Students can choose to study science, commerce, or the arts. It serves a wide area across seven different districts. These districts include Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Thane.

The university operates through a complex system of direct and affiliated instruction. Some students attend the main university campuses directly. This structure allows the university to reach a huge number of people. It also connects academic study with professional medical practice.

The history of the institution began in the mid-1800s. In 1854, Sir Charles Wood drafted a famous document called Wood's despatch. This document suggested educational reforms across India. It advocated for creating universities in major Indian cities. Following a petition from the Bombay Association, the University of Bombay was established in 1857. The school was modeled after the University of London in the United Kingdom. Before the university officially opened, two colleges already existed. The Faculty of Arts at Elphinstone College started in 1835. The Faculty of Medicine at Grant Medical College began in 1845. Both colleges gave their degree-granting powers to the new university.

The university has undergone many changes since its founding. Until 1904, the school mostly conducted examinations and developed curricula. It also awarded affiliations to various colleges. In 1904, the university began offering teaching departments and research disciplines. It also started providing post-graduate courses. After India gained independence in 1947, the university was reorganized. This happened under The Bombay University Act of 1953. In 1996, the institution officially changed its name from the University of Bombay to the University of Mumbai.

Growth in student numbers has been very significant over the decades. In 1949, the university had 42,272 students and 80 affiliated colleges. By 1975, the enrollment had grown to 156,190 students. The number of affiliated colleges also rose to 114 by that time. Today, the scale is even larger with over half a million students. The university has also embraced modern technology to manage this growth. They now use online delivery for examination question papers. They also use scanners at remote centers to assess answer books. In 2015, the university started an academic depository. It was the first university in India to do this.

Many notable people have been connected to the university's history. In 1888, Cornelia Sorabji became the university's first female graduate. She later became the first female advocate in India. The university's campus also contains famous architectural landmarks. The Rajabai Clock Tower is a major landmark at the Fort campus. It was built in the 1870s. A businessman named Premchand Roychand paid for much of its construction. He named the tower after his mother, Rajabai.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework ranked it 61st among Indian universities in 2024. The institution also maintains connections with other famous schools. It has signed agreements with the University of Amsterdam and the University of Bath. It also works with universities in China and Australia. These connections help the university remain part of a global academic network.
