The Avon River, also called Ōtākaro, winds right through the middle of the city. Most of the land is very flat, except for the high Port Hills. This makes the city feel open and easy to move through.

The city is known as the "Garden City" because of its many green spaces.

It has a temperate oceanic climate, which means it gets regular, moderate rain. Many people enjoy the large urban parks found along the river banks. The city also has a strong connection to European styles of building. You can see this in the many stone buildings with Gothic designs. These structures give the city a very special look and feel.

Long before settlers arrived, Māori people lived in this area. The Waitaha people first inhabited the land around 1250 AD. They lived in areas filled with marshland, grasslands, and tall forests.

British settlement began in the mid-nineteenth century. In 1850, the "First Four Ships" brought the Canterbury Pilgrims from Britain.
