Over five million visitors arrive every year to enjoy the seaside.

Long ago, this land looked very different from today. It was a remote and barren heathland. The area was mostly empty of people. Only a few fishermen and smugglers visited the coast.

Some people even lived in the area thousands of years ago. Archaeologists found a very old skull near the River Stour. They also found pottery from the Iron Age on the East Cliff. These finds show that humans have been near this coast for a long time.

In 1810, a man named Lewis Tregonwell founded a health resort.

He believed the pine-scented air was good for the lungs. To help this, he and others planted hundreds of pine trees. This created lovely paths like the Invalids' Walk. The town grew slowly at first with small villas and cottages. A physician named Augustus Granville later wrote about the town in a book. His writing helped more people discover the benefits of the sea air.

Everything changed when the railway arrived in 1870.
