This city is the second-largest in Wales. It is also the twenty-eighth largest city in the United Kingdom.

Many people wonder where the name Swansea comes from. The Welsh name is Abertawe. This means the mouth or estuary of the Tawe river.

The English name might come from Old Norse words. Some people think it refers to a Viking named Sweyn. Others think it means "swine sea" because of porpoises in the bay.

People gave the city the nickname Copperopolis. Ships brought metal ores from many far places. They came from Cornwall, Africa, and Australia.
