It sits in East Sussex, just south of London. The city is part of a larger area called Brighton and Hove. This area became an official city in the year 2000. Many people visit because it is near the coast. It is a place where the land meets the sea.

People have lived near the coast for thousands of years. Archaeologists found a camp from the Neolithic period on Whitehawk Hill. This camp is very old, dating back to between 3500 BC and 2700 BC. Later, the Romans lived in the area too. They built villas and roads near Preston Village.

After the Romans left, the Anglo-Saxons arrived. They likely gave the town its original name. This name was recorded as Bristelmestune in the Domesday Book of 1086.

For a long time, the town was a small fishing village. People caught lots of mackerel in the sea. The town was once called Brighthelmstone. This name likely means the home of a man named Beorthelm. In the 1500s, the town was even attacked by French invaders. Later, the town grew as a place for health. People traveled there to bathe in the sea to help them feel better.

Brighton became very fashionable in the late 1700s. The Prince Regent, who later became King George IV, loved the town. He built the beautiful Royal Pavilion there.

The arrival of the railway in 1841 changed everything. It allowed people from London to visit for the day. Many famous buildings were built during the Victorian era. These include the Grand Hotel and the Palace Pier.
