It sits in East Sussex, England. It is south of London.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Some lived there in the Stone Age. Later, Romans lived in the area too. The town was once called Brighthelmstone. This name comes from an old way of speaking. It likely means the home of a man named Beorthelm.

For a long time, it was a small fishing town. People caught mackerel in the sea. Later, people began to visit for health. They thought bathing in sea water could cure illnesses.

The Prince Regent liked the town very much. He even built the Royal Pavilion there.

In 1841, the railway arrived. This made it easy for people from London to visit. Many big buildings were built soon after. These include the Palace Pier and the Grand Hotel.
