It serves as a major urban center within the Canterbury Region. The city sits near the center of the east coast. It is located just east of the Canterbury Plains. To the east, the Pacific Ocean meets the coastline. To the south, the ancient volcanic Banks Peninsula forms a boundary.

The Avon River, also known as the Ōtākaro, winds through the city center. Most of the urban area is relatively flat. This flatness exists except for the elevated Port Hills.

The city's environment is defined by a temperate oceanic climate. This means the area receives regular and moderate rainfall. Christchurch is often called the 'Garden City.' This nickname comes from its many green spaces and English-style gardens. The city also possesses a deep Māori heritage. The Māori name for the area is Ōtautahi. This name refers to a specific site by the Avon River. It was a seasonal food-gathering place for the Ngāi Tahu chief Te Pōtiki Tautahi.

Human activity in this region began long before European arrival. The Waitaha iwi first inhabited the land around 1250 AD.

At that time, the landscape consisted of swampland, marshland, and tall forests. These forests were made of trees like kahikatea, mataī, and tōtara. Later, the Kāti Māmoe people migrated from the North Island. They eventually merged with the Kāi Tahu people through conflict and marriage. Kaiapoi Pā became a vital trading center for these groups. This site sat at the meeting point of three major rivers. It was likely one of the richest eel fisheries in the country.

British colonial settlement began in the mid-nineteenth century. The Canterbury Association chartered the 'First Four Ships' to bring settlers.

These ships arrived at Lyttelton Harbour in 1850. The settlers were known as the Canterbury Pilgrims. They wanted to build a city modeled after English towns. They specifically looked to Christ Church in Oxford for inspiration. The name Christchurch was officially adopted in 1848. Some early colonists preferred the name Lyttelton instead. However, the name Christchurch was kept to distinguish the settlement from the port.

Christchurch became an official city on 31 July 1856. This makes it the oldest established city in New Zealand. The city saw rapid growth during the late 1800s. Many stone buildings were built in the Gothic Revival style.

The economy grew through the export of wool and frozen meat. The opening of the Main South Line railway helped industrialize the city. This infrastructure supported a growing population and a stronger economy.

Today, Christchurch is a vital hub for international travel and science. It is recognized as one of five Antarctic gateway cities. This means it hosts support bases for several nations traveling to Antarctica. The city is also served by the Christchurch Airport in Harewood. This is the second-busiest airport in New Zealand. The city is a center for performing arts and academic study. The University of Canterbury is located here. It has also hosted major sporting events like the 1974 British Commonwealth Games.

Despite its success, the city has faced significant hardships. A series of earthquakes began in September 2010. The most destructive earthquake occurred on 22 February 2011.

This event killed 185 people. Thousands of buildings suffered severe damage or collapsed. In 2019, the city also experienced a terrorist attack at two mosques. These events have led to long-term recovery and rebuilding projects. The city continues to work through these challenges while maintaining its cultural identity.
