It sits at the southwestern tip of the North Island. The city is located between the Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. It is the third-largest city in New Zealand. It is also the second-largest city on the North Island. Wellington is the southernmost capital of a sovereign state in the world. The city has a temperate maritime climate. Because it sits near the narrow Cook Strait, it is the windiest city in the world by average wind speed.

The legendary explorer Kupe is said to have visited the harbour around the 10th century. Local mythology says he named the two islands in the harbour after his daughters, Matiu and Mākaro. The harbour is known as Te Whanganui-a-Tara, meaning "the great harbour of Tara." This name refers to Tara, the son of the chief Whatonga. Other Māori names include Pōneke and Te Upoko-o-te-Ika. The latter means "The Head of the Fish of Māui." This refers to the southernmost part of the North Island.

Initially, groups like Rangitāne and Muaūpoko settled the region. However, the Musket Wars caused great disruption. This led to northern iwi, such as Te Āti Awa, moving into the area in the early 19th century. By 1840, several groups held mana whenua interests through conquest and occupation. The Waitangi Tribunal has documented these complex shifts in settlement and authority.

European settlement began in the late 1830s.

Colonel William Wakefield arrived in 1839 to purchase land for the New Zealand Company. Settlers arrived on ships like the Aurora in early 1840. They first built homes at Petone near the Hutt River. However, the land was swampy and prone to flooding. The settlers soon moved across the harbour to Thorndon.
