The HMS Endeavour was a famous research ship.

It was not always a navy ship. It was built in 1764 by Thomas Fishburn. He built it in Whitby, England. People called it a "Whitby Cat." It was a sturdy ship made of oak and elm. It had a flat bottom. This design was very helpful. It let the ship sail in shallow water. It also let the ship sit on a beach for repairs.

The ship had a very important job in 1768. The Royal Society wanted to study the stars. They wanted to see Venus pass in front of the Sun. This is called a transit of Venus. They also wanted to find a new land in the south. They called this land Terra Australis Incognita.

The Navy bought the ship for the mission. They renamed it the HMS Endeavour. Lieutenant James Cook was chosen to lead the crew. He was good at math and making maps. He took charge of the ship in May 1768.

The voyage was a very long journey.

The ship left England in August 1768. It carried 94 people and many animals. They had pigs, poultry, and even a milking goat. The crew sailed to Tahiti first. They watched the transit of Venus in June 1769. After that, they sailed to many islands. They visited Huahine, Bora Bora, and Raiatea. Cook claimed these islands for Great Britain. Then the ship sailed toward New Zealand.

In October 1769, the ship reached New Zealand. It was the first European ship to see those islands in a long time. The Māori people saw the ship for the first time. They thought it might be a giant bird.

Later, the ship reached the east coast of Australia in April 1770. This was a very hard part of the trip. The ship hit the Great Barrier Reef. It ran aground on the coral. Cook had to throw heavy guns into the sea. This made the ship lighter so it could float.

The Endeavour spent nearly three years at sea. It finally returned to England in July 1771. The ship had many different lives after that. It carried troops and moved timber. It was eventually sunk in 1778 during a war.

Today, we remember the ship in many ways. You can see a replica in Sydney.
