The ship sailed to the Pacific Ocean. The crew wanted to see the planet Venus pass the Sun. They also wanted to find a new southern land. The ship went to Tahiti first. Later, it reached New Zealand. The Māori people saw the ship for the first time. They thought it was a giant bird or a floating island.

The Endeavour also went to Australia. It was the first European ship to reach the east coast. The ship hit a reef in the Great Barrier Reef. This was very dangerous. Cook had to throw heavy guns into the sea to make the ship light.

The crew fixed the ship on the land. The voyage lasted nearly three years. Today, you can see a model of the ship in a museum.
