Samuel Wallis was a famous sea captain and explorer.

He was born at Fenteroon Farm in Cornwall. He spent many years working in the Royal Navy. He became a lieutenant in 1746. Later, he was promoted to commander in 1756. By April 1757, he was a captain. He led a big trip to sail around the world. This trip was meant to find a large southern continent.

His voyage was a very big job. He sailed on a ship named HMS Dolphin. He was joined by Philip Carteret on another ship. A big storm soon separated the two ships. This happened after they sailed through the Strait of Magellan. In June 1767, the HMS Dolphin reached Tahiti. Wallis called the island King George the Third's Island. He named it after the King of England. Wallis felt the island was a very healthy and lovely spot.

Wallis was too sick to walk on the land himself. His officer, Tobias Furneaux, went ashore first. Furneaux raised a flag and took the land for the King. A man named John Harrison helped the crew find their way. He used a method called lunar distance to find longitude. This was a way to find a ship's position. The math was very hard and took four hours. They also watched a solar eclipse to be sure.

The crew stayed in Matavai Bay for over a month. Wallis found and named many other islands during his trip. He named five islands in the Society Islands. He also named six atolls in the Tuamotu Islands. He found the islands of Rongerik and Rongelap too. He even named the island of Uvea after himself. The journey became very difficult later on. Many crew members died from a sickness called dysentery in Batavia.

Wallis finally returned to England in May 1768. He brought back much useful information about the Pacific. He shared his findings with another famous explorer, James Cook. Some men from the Dolphin even sailed with Cook later. This helped Cook find the islands more easily. Wallis lived until 1795. His life was a big part of ocean history.
