Greenwich has a very long history with the sea. Romans used this area as a place to land their boats. King Henry VIII also lived in this area. In 1675, King Charles II started the Royal Observatory nearby. This helped people find their way using the stars. Greenwich is also home to the Prime Meridian. This is a special line used to set time around the world. Because of this, Greenwich is a center for studying space and time.

The museum was officially started by a law in 1934. A man named Sir James Caird gave many donations to help. Because of his help, the museum could truly begin. King George VI opened the museum on April 27, 1937. His daughter, Princess Elizabeth, went with him on a boat trip. The first person to lead the museum was Sir Geoffrey Callender.

Today, the museum still honors Sir James Caird with a special award.

Sometimes, the museum has difficult stories to tell about its items. After World War II, the museum got items from a German naval school. These included flags, paintings, and ship models. Some people have called these items looted art. The museum calls them war trophies from the Potsdam Conference.
