He studied math and stars to learn how to sail. These skills helped him lead many ships later in life.

Cook joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He worked hard during the Seven Years' War. He helped map the entrance to the St. Lawrence River. He also spent five seasons mapping the coast of Newfoundland.

He learned to use new ways to survey the land. This made his maps much better than others. His great work caught the attention of leaders in Britain. They chose him to lead big trips to the Pacific Ocean.

Between 1768 and 1779, Cook led three major voyages.

On his first trip, he sailed the ship Endeavour. He was the first European to see the east coast of Australia. He also traveled around the main islands of New Zealand. During these trips, he saw many new places like Easter Island and Alaska. He met many different indigenous peoples along the way. He also helped stop a sickness called scurvy. This kept his sailors healthy on long trips.

He was patient and worked hard even when things were dangerous. He used special ships that could sail in shallow water. This was helpful when he hit rocks or landed on beaches. He also brought scientists on his trips. They studied plants and stars to learn more about the world. These scientists helped make his voyages very important for science.

In 1779, Cook visited the Hawaiian Islands for the second time.
