He lived from 1728 to 1779. Cook is famous for leading three major voyages of exploration. These trips took him across the Pacific and Southern Oceans. He mapped many parts of the world that were unknown to Europeans. His work provided a massive amount of new scientific and geographical knowledge.

He was known for being a very competent and patient leader. He was also a highly skilled maker of nautical charts.

Cook's journey began with a strong education in mathematics and navigation. He was born in Marton, Yorkshire, to a family of farm laborers. As a teenager, he worked as a shopboy in a fishing village. Later, he became an apprentice on coal ships in the merchant navy.

During this time, he studied algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and astronomy. These subjects were essential for commanding a ship on the open sea. He eventually earned a mariner license and worked on various merchant vessels. This early training prepared him for the difficult work of ocean exploration.

In 1755, Cook joined the British Royal Navy. He served during the Seven Years' War, a major global conflict. While serving in North America, he learned advanced surveying techniques. He met an army officer named Samuel Holland who used a plane table to survey land.

Cook combined Holland's land-surveying methods with his own hydrographic expertise. Hydrography is the science of measuring and mapping the ocean floor and coastlines. This combination allowed him to create charts that were much more accurate than previous maps. He used these skills to map the St. Lawrence River and the coast of Newfoundland.

Cook's success in mapping led to his selection for three great voyages. The first voyage began in 1768 aboard the HMS Endeavour.

The ship was a sturdy vessel with a shallow draught. A shallow draught means the bottom of the ship does not sit very deep in the water. This allowed the Endeavour to sail safely through shallow coastal areas. The primary goal was to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti. However, Cook also had secret orders to search for a hypothesized southern continent called Terra Australis Incognita.

During these expeditions, Cook achieved many historical firsts. He completed the first recorded circumnavigation of the main islands of New Zealand. He also led the first recorded European visits to the east coast of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands.

His voyages covered tens of thousands of miles of uncharted territory. He visited places like Easter Island, Alaska, and South Georgia Island. Cook also made contact with many different indigenous peoples. He claimed several new territories for the Kingdom of Great Britain during his travels.

Cook's scientific contributions were just as important as his maps. He worked hard to prevent scurvy, a serious disease that affected many sailors. Because of his efforts, the Royal Society awarded him the Copley Gold Medal.

He also brought scientists, such as the naturalist Joseph Banks, on his journeys. These experts studied plants, animals, and stars. This made his voyages important for many different fields of science. His work helped people understand the biology and geography of the Pacific region much better.

In 1779, Cook reached the Hawaiian Islands for a second time. During this visit, a dispute with Native Hawaiians turned violent.
