Captain George Vancouver was a prominent Royal Navy officer and maritime explorer.

He is most famous for leading the Vancouver Expedition to the Pacific Northwest. This mission involved charting the rugged coastlines of North America. These regions include modern Alaska, Washington, Oregon, and California. His work also covered parts of the Canadian province of British Columbia. Through his detailed mapping, Vancouver helped define the geography of the northwestern Pacific coast.

Vancouver's career began early in the Royal Navy. He entered service in 1771 at the age of 13. He served as a midshipman on two major voyages led by James Cook. During Cook's third voyage from 1776 to 1780, Vancouver witnessed the first European exploration of the Hawaiian Islands.

After returning to Britain, he was commissioned as a lieutenant. He served in the West Indies and participated in the Battle of the Saintes in 1782. These experiences prepared him for the complex command he would later hold.

In the late 1780s, a diplomatic conflict known as the Nootka Crisis emerged. Spain and Britain nearly went to war over Nootka Sound. They disagreed over who had the right to settle the Pacific Northwest coast. When the Nootka Convention ended the crisis in 1790, Vancouver was given a vital mission. He was appointed to command the ship HMS Discovery. His goal was to take possession of Nootka Sound and survey the surrounding coasts.

The Vancouver Expedition departed England on April 1, 1791. Vancouver commanded two ships, the Discovery and the Chatham. The expedition first traveled to Cape Town, Australia, and New Zealand. They also visited Tahiti and the Sandwich Islands, which are now known as Hawaii. During this time, they collected botanical samples and surveyed many coastlines. In Western Australia, Vancouver formally claimed King George Sound for the British. This location later became the town of Albany.

Mapping the North American coast required intense, dangerous work. Vancouver's orders were to survey every inlet and outlet up to Alaska. Because large ships were difficult to maneuver in uncharted waters, he often used small craft. These smaller boats were propelled by both sails and oars. Vancouver named many landmarks after his colleagues and friends. He named Mount Baker after Joseph Baker and Puget Sound after Peter Puget. He also named Mount Rainier after Rear Admiral Peter Rainier.

Vancouver often encountered other explorers during his travels. In April 1792, he met American Captain Robert Gray near Oregon. Later that year, he met a Spanish expedition near Vancouver Island. The Spanish leaders were Dionisio Alcalá Galiano and Cayetano Valdés y Flores. Vancouver and the Spanish explorers cooperated for three weeks to explore the Georgia Strait. They even agreed to name a large island Quadra and Vancouver Island. Eventually, the name was shortened to Vancouver Island.

Despite his successes, Vancouver faced significant hardship after returning to England in 1795. He dealt with legal disputes and personal harassment from former associates. One man, Thomas Pitt, attacked Vancouver on a London street corner.

This conflict was tied to Vancouver's past naval discipline of Pitt. Vancouver died in 1798 at the age of 40. His death occurred in relative obscurity. His legacy lives on through the many places that bear his name.
