He was born in 1757 in King's Lynn, England. His father was a deputy collector of customs. Vancouver joined the Royal Navy when he was only 13. He sailed on two voyages with the explorer James Cook. During these trips, he saw the Hawaiian Islands for the first time. He later became a lieutenant and served in the West Indies. He even fought in the Battle of the Saintes in 1782.

In 1791, Vancouver led a very important expedition. He commanded two ships named Discovery and Chatham.

His mission was to explore the Pacific region. He first traveled to Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti. He also visited the Sandwich Islands, which we call Hawaii today. He claimed a place in Western Australia for the British. After that, he began exploring the coast of North America. He traveled through many areas in modern Alaska, Washington, and Oregon. He also sailed along the coast of California.

Mapping the coast was a very hard job. Vancouver could not always use his large ships. The waters were often dangerous and uncharted. Instead, he used small boats moved by sails and oars. He carefully checked every inlet and every bay. He named many places after his friends and fellow officers. For example, he named Mount Baker after Joseph Baker. He named Puget Sound after Peter Puget. He also named Mount Rainier after Admiral Peter Rainier. These names are still used on maps today.

Vancouver met other explorers during his long journeys. In 1792, he met the American Captain Robert Gray. He also met a Spanish expedition near Vancouver Island. The Spanish leaders were Juan Francisco Bodega y Quadra and Dionisio Alcalá Galiano. Vancouver and the Spanish explorers worked together for three weeks. They explored the Georgia Strait to make better maps. They even decided to name a large island Quadra and Vancouver Island. Later, the name was shortened to just Vancouver Island. He also explored the Columbia River area with William Robert Broughton.

Life became difficult for Vancouver after he returned home. He faced many problems with people in London. A man named Thomas Pitt attacked him on a street corner. This happened because Vancouver had disciplined him in the Navy. Even though Vancouver was a great navigator, he died in 1798. He was only 40 years old. No one knows the exact cause of his death. He is buried at St Peter's Church in Petersham.
