This was called the Kolymskaya expedition. He sailed from St. Petersburg and arrived at Nizhnekolymsk in 1820. To explore, he used sledges pulled by dogs. He traveled through lands where the Yakut people lived. In 1822, he traveled on the ice for 46 days. He reached a very far north point at 72 degrees latitude. His team proved that there was open sea north of the Kolyma River. Before this, many people thought it was just dry land.

Wrangel also spent time as a leader in North America. In 1829, he became the chief manager of the Russian-American Company. This role made him the governor of Russian settlements in Alaska. He traveled to his new job through Siberia and Kamkamchatka. While in Alaska, he worked hard to improve the area. He helped people start growing potatoes. He also opened several mines and built new roads. He even built bridges and government buildings to help the settlements grow. He wrote a memoir about his observations of the land and people.

His career in the navy continued for many years. He was promoted to rear admiral in 1837. Later, he became a vice-admiral in 1847. He also served as the Minister of the Navy from 1855 to 1857. Wrangel wrote many books about his travels and the Arctic Ocean. One of his books helped the scientist Charles Darwin. Darwin used Wrangel's ideas to think about how animals navigate.
