Wrangel Island is a huge place in the Arctic Ocean.

It sits within the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug of Russia. The island is located between the Chukchi Sea and the East Siberian Sea. It is the 92nd-largest island in the whole world. Some people say it is about the same size as the island of Crete. The island is also very special because it sits on the 180th meridian. This line is where the International Date Line moves slightly to the east. This helps the island stay on the same day as the rest of Russia.

The land on the island has many different shapes. There is a wide plain along the southern coast. In the middle, there is a belt of low mountains.

The highest part of these mountains is the Tsentral'nye Mountain Range. The highest peak is called Gora Sovetskaya. It reaches an elevation of 2,138 meters above sea level. The northern part of the island is also a wide plain. Even though it is very high and far north, the island does not have glaciers.

A long time ago, this island was very famous for its animals. It was the last place where woolly mammoths lived.

Scientists used radiocarbon dating to study their bones. They found that mammoths lived here until about 4,000 years ago. This was during the time of ancient Egypt and the Bronze Age. While mammoths died out elsewhere, 500 to 1,000 mammoths stayed isolated here. Today, the island is a home for many other animals.

Polar bears use the island to make many dens. You can also find walruses, seals, and Arctic foxes there.

Captain Thomas Long gave the island its name. He named it after Baron Ferdinand von Wrangel. The Baron was an explorer and an Admiral in the Russian Navy. Interestingly, the Baron never actually visited the island himself. He only knew about it because he saw many birds flying north. He searched for the island during his expedition from 1823 to 1824. He did not find it during that trip. Later, the island became a very important place for science and protection.

Because the island is so special, it is a protected nature sanctuary. Russia calls it a "zapovednik," which means a strict nature reserve.

This means almost no humans can live there. Only a few people work on the island for science. In 2003, there were four rangers living there all year. About 12 scientists also visit during the summer months. The island is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage List. This list helps protect the most important natural places on Earth.
