They sit in the Bering Sea, east of the Kamchatka Peninsula. These islands are the westernmost part of the Aleutian Islands. Some islands in this chain belong to the United States. However, the Commander Islands belong to Russia. They are separated from the US island of Attu by a deep sea. The International Date Line also runs between them.

The land here has many different shapes. You might see folded mountains or flat volcanic plateaus. There are also low mountains and terraced plains. The islands were made by old volcanoes long ago. Steller's Peak is the highest point on Bering Island. Medny Island has its own high point called Stenjeger's Peak. The islands have no real forests or trees. Instead, the ground is covered in moss and grass. You can also find small dwarf trees and many lichens.

His ship, the St. Peter, wrecked on Bering Island. Bering and many crew members died there. A doctor named Georg Wilhelm Steller helped others survive. He taught them to eat seaweed to stay healthy. Later, the Russian-American Company moved Aleut people to the islands. These people came from Atka and Attu islands. Today, the people are mostly Russian and Aleut.

About 200,000 northern fur seals live near the islands. There are also around 5,000 Steller sea lions. You can find sea otters, common seals, and large whales. Many whales are even endangered species. On land, over a million seabirds nest on the cliffs. You might see puffins, gulls, or even rare eagles. Many different kinds of salmon swim in the fast streams.

Most of the islands are part of a nature reserve.

This is called the Komandorsky State Nature Reserve. It helps keep the plants and animals safe from harm. Most people live in the village of Nikolskoye. This village is on the northwest end of Bering Island. It has about 613 people living there. The local economy relies on fishing and ecotourism. People also gather mushrooms or work for the government. The village has a school and a small dirt airstrip.
