Attu Island is a large place in the Aleutian Islands. It is part of the state of Alaska. This island is one of the westernmost points in the United States. It sits far from the Alaskan mainland. It is also near the Russian islands called the Commander Islands and the Kuril Islands.

The island covers a large land area. It is the 23rd largest island in the United States. Because the International Date Line passes to its west, it is a very special place for our calendar dates.

Long ago, the Unangan people lived on Attu. They had many villages and large groups of people. In 1742, a Russian explorer named Aleksei Chirikov arrived. He called the island Saint Theodore. Russian traders stayed there for years to hunt sea otters. Later, the island became a very important place during a global conflict. This history changed the island forever.

During World War II, a major land battle happened on Attu. This was the only land battle of the war fought on territory that is now part of a U.S. state. In June 1942, Japanese forces landed on the island.

The island had a small group of people living there at the time. These included 45 native Aleuts and two Americans. The Japanese forces eventually grew to about 2,300 troops on the island. In May 1943, American forces began an operation to take the island back. The weather was very harsh for the soldiers. They had to deal with snow, ice, and difficult terrain. Many soldiers suffered from frostbite or sickness due to the cold.

After the fighting ended, the island changed again. The United States government built a LORAN station at Theodore Point. This station helped ships and planes find their way. The Coast Guard ran this station for many years. It moved to different spots like Casco Cove and Massacre Bay. In 1976, planes even flew scheduled trips from Anchorage to Attu. However, the station finally closed in 2010. When the last people left, Attu became the largest uninhabited island in the United States.

Today, Attu is a quiet and solemn place. The battlefield is now a National Historic Landmark. A peace monument stands on the island to honor those who died.

This monument was placed by the government of Japan on Engineer Hill. It is dedicated to world peace. Even though no one lives there now, the island remains a place of great history. It links the past of the Unangan people, the Russian traders, and the soldiers to the present day.
