Midway Atoll is a special place in the North Pacific Ocean.

It sits roughly halfway between North America and Asia. It is part of the Hawaiian island chain, but it is not part of the state of Hawaii. Instead, it is a territory of the United States. The atoll is shaped like a ring made of coral reef. This reef forms a shallow area of water called a lagoon.

Inside this ring are two main islands. Sand Island is the largest piece of land. It has houses and an airstrip for planes. Eastern Island sits right next to it across a narrow channel. Spit Island is a thin reef that completes the circle around the lagoon.

This atoll was formed a very long time ago. It began about 28 million years ago as a volcano.

The volcano was once as large as the island of Lanai. Over millions of years, the island slowly sank into the ocean. As the volcano went down, the coral reef grew upward to stay near the surface. This created the shallow atoll we see today. The land is made of different layers of limestone and volcanic rock. Now, the islands provide a home for millions of seabirds. You can see many Laysan Albatrosses living here.

People first saw these islands in the 1800s. Captain N.C. Brooks sighted them in 1859. He originally called them the Middlebrook Islands. Later, Captain William Reynolds took possession of the land for the United States in 1867. In 1903, workers arrived to lay a telegraph cable across the ocean. They built buildings to help with this work.

These workers even brought new plants and animals to the island. In the 1930s, wealthy travelers used flying boats to visit. They stayed at a lodge named after the local birds.

Midway became very important during World War II. It was used as a place for ships and planes to refuel. In June 1942, a major event called the Battle of Midway took place.

Planes from Eastern Island joined Navy ships to defend the atoll. This battle was a major turning point in the war in the Pacific. During this time, the military built airstrips and gun posts. One of these was Henderson Field. Today, the area is a National Wildlife Refuge. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service looks after it.

Life on Midway is very different from life on the mainland. About 50 people live on Sand Island today. These are mostly staff and workers who help manage the refuge.

Most supplies must be brought in by ship or plane. They even use a greenhouse to grow some fresh fruits and vegetables. You cannot visit Midway just for a vacation anymore. The visitor program stopped in 2012 because of budget changes. Now, people only go there for business or to volunteer. It remains a quiet and protected place for nature.
