The Aleutian Islands are a long chain of islands in the North Pacific Ocean.

This group includes 14 large volcanic islands and 55 smaller ones. Most of these islands belong to the U.S. state of Alaska. However, the Commander Islands further west belong to Russia. The chain acts as a border between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is a very remote area of the world.

These islands were built by volcanic activity over a long time. They are part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. There are 57 volcanoes in the whole chain. Some of these volcanoes are active today. For example, a volcano erupted in 2017 and sent ash 30,000 feet into the sky.

The land rises quickly from the rocky coasts into steep mountains. The islands sit where the Pacific Plate and North American Plate meet. This movement makes the area very active.

Long ago, these islands were known as the Catherine Archipelago. They were part of Russia before the Alaska Purchase in 1867. The native people call themselves Unangan. They are also known as the Aleut.

During World War II, the islands saw important battles. Japanese forces landed on Kiska and Attu in June 1942. This was one of only two times the United States was invaded during the war.

Life on the islands is shaped by the weather. It is often very foggy and rainy. Unalaska is one of the rainiest places in the United States.

The wind is so strong that very few trees can grow. Most of the land is covered in thick grass and small shrubs instead.

You might find small conifers, but they rarely grow very tall. They stay short so the wind does not snap them.

Many animals find a home in these waters and on the land. Large groups of seabirds live on islands like Buldir.

You can also find sea otters along the coasts. These otters are very important for the ocean. They eat sea urchins, which helps kelp forests grow thick.
