It is part of the Western United States. It sits far away from the other states. This makes it one of two non-contiguous states. Hawaii is the other one. Alaska is the northernmost and westernmost state in the U.S. It also reaches the furthest east in terms of longitude. To the north lie the Arctic Ocean and the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. The Pacific Ocean is to the south.

Because it is so big, it is also very empty. In 2024, only 740,133 people lived there. This makes it the most sparsely populated state. This means there are not many people for all that land. However, it has a lot of people compared to Northern Canada or Greenland. Most people live in a few places. Anchorage is the largest city. About half of the people live in that one area.
