Because of this, Chukotka is the closest part of Russia to the U.S. The distance is only 88.51 kilometres. It is a place where two different sides of the world meet.

The land in Chukotka has many different faces. About half of the area is above the Arctic Circle. In the north, you will find a frozen Arctic desert. The middle part of the region is a grassy area called the tundra. In the south, there is a forest area called the taiga.

The land is very mountainous. It has the Chukotsky Mountains and the Anadyr Highlands. Many rivers flow through these mountains. The Anadyr River is one of the biggest. There are also many large lakes, like Lake Elgygytgyn. This lake was made by an impact crater.

People have lived in this land for a very long time. Long ago, Paleo-Siberian hunters lived here. This area was once part of a land bridge called Beringia. Later, many indigenous groups called it home. These included the Chukchi, Siberian Yupiks, and Inuit.

Russian explorers began to arrive in the 1600s. A man named Semyon Dezhnyov explored the coast in 1649. He built a settlement called Anadyrsk. Life was hard because of the cold weather. Many early forts were even left behind because there was not enough food.

Chukotka is a huge place, but not many people live there. It is the seventh-largest region in Russia. However, it only has 50,526 people. This makes it the least densely populated part of the country.
