Anadyr Highlands

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Anadyr Highlands are a huge mountain area. They sit in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in Russia. This place is one of two main mountain regions in Chukotka. The highlands rise up in the western part of the region. They sit southwest of the Chukotka Mountains. Many different lands sit near these mountains. To the north are the Chaun Lowlands. To the southeast are the Anadyr Lowlands. The Kolyma Mountains sit to the southwest. The Kolyma Lowlands are also nearby.

Water moves through these mountains in many ways. Several rivers start their journey here. The Anadyr River flows southeast from the highlands. It is called the Belaya River when it flows off the highland limits. The Bolshoy Anyuy and Maly Anyuy rivers flow west. They flow on both sides of the Anyuy Range. The Enmyvaam river flows south from Lake Elgygytgyn. This river later joins the Belaya River. The Chaun River flows north from the edge of a large crater.

Most of the eastern part is the Anadyr Plateau. This plateau is a very large feature of the highlands. It sits near the latitude of the Arctic Circle. The Pekulney Range marks its eastern edge. The ground here is mostly covered in tundra. You will also find many shrubs growing there. The average height of the plateau is between 500 and 1,000 meters.

A very special place sits in the center of the plateau. It is called Lake Elgygytgyn. This is an impact crater lake. That means it was made by a crash from space. The lake is a central part of the highlands. Many mountain ranges make up the rest of the system. These include the Tainykot Range and the Rauchuan Range. The Ilirney Range and the Anyuy Range are also there. Other ranges include the Neuten and the Chuvanay ranges.

Each mountain range has its own high peak. The Tainykot Range has a high point in the northwest. The Rauchuan Range has Mount Belaya as its highest point. The Anyuy Range has Blokhin Peak. The Chuvanay Range has Mount Chuvanay. The Pyrkanay Range and the Shchuchy Range also have high peaks. Even the Osinov Range has a highest point. These many peaks make the highlands a very big system.
