Anadyr Highlands

geography Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Anadyr Highlands are a major mountainous region located in Russia. They sit within the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug in the Far Eastern Federal District. This area is one of the two primary mountain systems in Chukotka. The highlands are situated in the western part of the region. They rise to the southwest of the Chukotka Mountains. This complex landscape forms a vital part of the East Siberian Mountains.

Geography defines the boundaries of this highland system. To the north, the land meets the Chaun Lowlands. The Anadyr Lowlands lie to the southeast of the mountains. In the southwest, the Kolyma Mountains are located nearby. The Kolyma Lowlands also border the region to the west. The Kolyma River flows through these western lowlands. The highlands act as a high barrier between these different lowland areas.

Water systems in the highlands follow many different paths. Several important rivers begin their journeys in these mountains. The Anadyr River flows southeast from the highland limits. Once it leaves the highlands, it is known as the Belaya River. The Bolshoy Anyuy and Maly Anyuy rivers flow in a westward direction. These two rivers run on opposite sides of the Anyuy Range. The Enmyvaam river flows south from Lake Elgygytgyn. It eventually joins the Belaya River. The Chaun River flows north from the northwestern edge of a large crater.

The most significant feature of the highlands is the Anadyr Plateau. This plateau makes up most of the eastern portion of the region. It is located near the latitude of the Arctic Circle. The Pekulney Range forms the eastern limit of the plateau. The surface of the plateau sits at an average height. This height ranges between 500 and 1,000 meters. Most of the plateau is covered by tundra and shrubs.

A unique geological feature sits in the center of the plateau. This is Lake Elgygytgyn. It is an impact crater lake. This means the lake formed in a crater created by an impact from space. This lake is a central landmark of the Anadyr Plateau. The landscape around the lake consists of the tundra found across the plateau.

The Anadyr Highlands comprise many different subranges. Each range has its own distinct characteristics and peaks. The Tainykot Range is located in the northwest. The Rauchuan Range is another part of the system. Its highest point is called Mount Belaya. The Ilirney Range is also part of the highlands. Its highest point is named Dvukh Tsirkov. The Anyuy Range contains Blokhin Peak. The Neuten Range and the Chuvanay Range are also included. The Chuvanay Range features Mount Chuvanay as its highest point.

Other ranges complete this vast mountain system. The Pyrkanay Range and the Shchuchy Range are part of the highlands. The Osinov Range is another included subrange. Each of these ranges contributes to the overall structure of the highlands. The system is defined by these various peaks and ridges. This diversity of ranges makes the Anadyr Highlands a complex geographical area.
