To the north, it shares a border with the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Its neighbors include Minnesota to the east, Montana to the west, and South Dakota to the south. The state is the 19th-largest in the country by area. However, it has a small population of just under 800,000 people. This makes it one of the least crowded states in the nation.

The Mandan and Hidatsa people lived in villages near the Missouri River. Other groups like the Ojibwe and Cree lived in the northeast. Several Sioux groups, including the Lakota and Dakota, lived throughout much of the state.

In the early 1700s, European traders arrived to hunt for furs. Later, the United States took control of the region. This led to many people moving there to start farms. The state was officially formed when North and South Dakota joined the Union on November 2, 1889.

During a time called the Dakota Boom, huge farms spread across the prairies. Farmers grew a lot of wheat and became very successful. Railroad companies like the Northern Pacific competed to reach these busy grain centers. Many farmers joined together in political groups to help their interests. One lasting result of these movements is the Bank of North Dakota. It is the only state-run bank in the entire country. This bank helps protect the state's economy during hard times.

As time passed, the state's economy began to rely on different resources.

Even the state's history has a funny story about its name. When President Benjamin Harrison signed the papers for statehood, he shuffled them. He did this so no one would know if North or South Dakota came first. Because of this, the states are simply listed in alphabetical order. This clever trick kept both new states happy at the time.
