The name Minnesota comes from the Dakota language. It might mean "clear blue water" or it might mean "cloudy water." Different tribes like the Dakota and the Ojibwe have deep roots here. Later, French explorers and missionaries arrived in the 17th century. They met the Dakota and Anishinaabe tribes. Much of the land was once part of the French holding of Louisiana.

Minnesota became the 32nd state in the Union in 1858.

Before it was a state, it went through many different territorial changes. Early settlers came to the area to work with timber and farming. They also built many railroads to move goods. Many immigrants arrived from places like Scandinavia and Germany.

These people helped build the early economy of the state. In the late 1800s, big mills used water power to make flour. Some of these companies grew into famous brands like General Mills.

Today, the state's economy has changed quite a bit. Instead of just farming and timber, people work in health care and finance.
