Together, the Twin Cities have about 3.69 million residents. Minneapolis itself has a population of 429,954 people. The city is famous for being the "City of Lakes."

It has thirteen lakes, many wetlands, and many creeks.

The city is built on a flat area with an artesian aquifer. This means there is water stored underground. The weather changes a lot throughout the year. Winters are very cold and filled with snow.

Summers are hot and humid. The city has a big system of public parks. These parks are all connected by a path called the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. You can see many beautiful views while traveling through these green spaces.

Long ago, the Dakota people lived on this land.

They have many stories about how they were created at the rivers. In the 1800s, European settlers arrived near Saint Anthony Falls. This is the only natural waterfall on the Mississippi River.

The power from these falls helped the city grow very fast. The city's name might come from a mix of Dakota and Greek words. It means "Many Lakes Town."

In the 19th century, Minneapolis was a leader in industry. It was known as the "Mill City" because of its many mills.

Later, the city helped start the computing industry. Famous companies like Target and General Mills began here. Even mobile refrigeration was invented in the city. Many people worked in these big factories and offices.

Today, Minneapolis is a place for art, sports, and learning.
