The Minneapolis Skyway System is a huge network of indoor bridges.

These paths connect many different buildings in downtown Minneapolis. They cover 80 full city blocks. The total length of the system is 9.5 miles. This allows people to walk in climate-controlled comfort all year. You can stay warm even when the weather is very cold.

This system is very large for one city. It is similar to other tunnel systems in cities like Toronto and Montreal.

These skyways work by linking the upper floors of buildings. Most bridges connect to the second or third floors. They link office towers, hotels, and banks together. You can also find restaurants and retail stores inside them. Some people even live in connected apartment complexes. This lets residents live, work, and shop without going outside.

They can move between the Nicollet Mall and sports facilities easily. This includes places like Target Center and U.S. Bank Stadium.

Real estate developer Leslie Park started the first part of the system. He worked with architect Edward Baker in the early 1960s. Park wanted to create a space like an indoor shopping mall. He built the first two skyways to connect specific buildings. One was built in 1962 to reach the Northwestern Bank Building. The second one went to the Roanoke Building in 1963. That second skyway is still being used today.

The system grew much larger over many years. By 1972, there were seven total segments. However, many of these paths were not yet connected. The IDS Center helped join the system together in 1972. This building has a large area called the Crystal Court. This area acts as a central hub for walkers. In 1976, the Downtown Council made the first formal maps. In 2016, the system even grew to connect to U.S. Bank Stadium.

Navigating the skyways is easy with the right tools. You can use paper maps or online maps to find your way. There is even a special app for the system. Some parts of the skyways are very popular for entering. The IDS Crystal Court is one of these main spots. Other busy points include City Center and the Wells Fargo Center.

Because individual buildings own the bridges, they have different hours. Some skyways might close while others stay open late.
