Park built two skyways to connect the Northstar Center to other buildings. The first connected to the Northwestern Bank Building in 1962. The second connected to the Roanoke Building in 1963. That 1963 segment remains in use today as the oldest part of the system.

As the years passed, the system grew in complexity and scale. By 1972, the network had grown to seven total segments. However, many of these segments were still disconnected from each other. The construction of the IDS Center in 1972 helped to unify the system. This building features skyways in all four directions. It also contains a large atrium called the Crystal Court. This area serves as a central hub for the entire network. In 1976, the Downtown Council created the first formal maps and signage. The system continued to expand even more recently. In 2016, a new development connected the U.S. Bank Stadium to the skyway system.

The skyways have even become part of local culture. In 1987, the band The Replacements released an album called Pleased to Meet Me. It included a song titled "Skyway."
