Later, the Bikeabout system in Portsmouth used smart cards to unlock bikes. A smart card is a plastic card with a magnetic stripe. In 2009, the BIXI project launched in Montreal, Canada. This system helped spark a huge wave of bike sharing in many cities. By 2022, about 3,000 cities worldwide offered these programs.

Today, bike sharing is a big part of how cities move people. Many of the world's largest programs are located in China. For example, Wuhan had about 90,000 bikes in 2012. A major wave of electronic bike sharing began in France. In 1998, the city of Rennes launched Velo a la cart. Following this, the company JCDecaux launched larger systems in Vienna, Lyon, and Paris. The Vélib' system in Paris became a global model for growth. This success led to the BIXI project in Montreal in 2009. The BIXI infrastructure was later used to help launch systems like New York City's Citi Bike and London's "Boris bikes."

Bicycle sharing can be categorized into several generations or types. The first is staffed stations, often called zero-generation systems. These are managed by employees or volunteers and are common for tourists. Another type is long-term checkout, or bike libraries. In these systems, a person keeps a bike for several months.
