Bicycle-sharing system

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A bicycle-sharing system, also known as a public bike share (PBS) scheme, is a shared transport service. It provides bicycles or electric bicycles for short-term use by individuals at a low cost. These systems act as a "first- and last-mile" connection to public transportation. This means they bridge the gap between a person's starting point and a transit hub. By offering an affordable and flexible way to travel, these programs help reduce traffic congestion. They also help lower greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

Modern systems generally operate through two distinct mechanical methods. The first is a docked network. In these systems, bicycles are rented from and returned to fixed, physical stations. The second is a dockless system. These systems utilize mobile technology and GPS, or Global Positioning System, to track locations. GPS allows users to pick up and drop off bicycles in more flexible locations without a fixed station.

Bicycle sharing began with grassroots efforts in Europe during the mid-1960s. In 1965, Luud Schimmelpennink initiated the White Bicycle Plan in Amsterdam. This project involved painting fifty bicycles white for public use. However, the experiment lasted less than one month because most bikes were stolen or found in canals. A similar effort, the Yellow Bike Project, launched in Portland, Oregon, in 1994. While it gained publicity, it was also unsustainable due to theft and vandalism.

Technological shifts changed how these programs functioned. In 1995, the ByCylken system launched in Copenhagen with 300 bicycles. It used special locking stands where riders paid a refundable deposit. Later, the Bikeabout system in Portsmouth, UK, used magnetic striped "smart cards" to automate the process. Users could unlock a bike from a storage rack at a kiosk. This system also used CCTV cameras to monitor for vandalism.

A major wave of electronic bike sharing began in France. In 1998, the city of Rennes launched Velo a la cart. Following this, the company JCDecaux launched larger systems in Vienna, Lyon, and Paris. The Vélib' system in Paris became a global model for growth. This success led to the BIXI project in Montreal in 2009. The BIXI infrastructure was later used to help launch systems like New York City's Citi Bike and London's "Boris bikes."

Bicycle sharing can be categorized into several generations or types. The first is staffed stations, often called zero-generation systems. These are managed by employees or volunteers and are common for tourists. Another type is long-term checkout, or bike libraries. In these systems, a person keeps a bike for several months. This leads to lower usage frequency, averaging about three uses per day. However, riders become more familiar with the bike and may perform minor maintenance.

The scale of these programs is massive. By 2022, bike share schemes were available in approximately 3,000 cities worldwide. China hosts many of the largest programs in the world. In 2012, Wuhan had roughly 90,000 bikes and Hangzhou had 60,000 bikes. These systems provide significant social and health benefits. They promote physical activity and improve urban accessibility. They also help cities manage the challenges of modern mobility.
